A structured beginner guitar syllabus designed to build essential skills in technique, note reading, and musical understanding, helping students achieve preparatory-level proficiency through consistent practice and guided exercises.

Guitar Resources – Level Prep
Feel free to follow this syllabus if you find it helpful. The timing on this is for an credited class, so the pace might be to fast for a once-a-week lesson, unless the student practices a lot!
By the end of the Preparatory Level, Guitar students will be able to:
Identify all parts of the guitar
Identify all open strings and note names through Fret 3
Identify B (middle line) up to G (space above staff) on the Treble clef staff
Sight read easy melodies on the B and E strings
Identify understand a wide variety of musical signs and symbols
Play the fretting hand
Play downstrokes and alternating downstrokes and upstrokes with ease
Choose and play repertoire that reinforces your learning
Students should have the following available:
An acoustic or electric guitar
Flash cards or Note Learning App
