For Livin on a Prayer, focus on
-
Dynamic control: Verses are softer and intimate, chorus is powerful. Practice building energy.
-
Pitch accuracy: The melody is iconic. Make sure they stay on pitch, especially during the high notes.
-
“Whoa-ohhh” section: The whole crowd is gonna be singing with you, belt with control, don’t shout.
-
Watch the timing: Phrasing needs to sit in the groove, especially in the verses (“Tommy used to work on the docks…”).
Evie
Stay in rhythm: Keyboard players can get “floaty” — lock in with the drummer and bassist.
The synth part to this song is the secret sauce, the crowd may not prominently hear you, but they will DEFINITELY feel the wall of sound you are creating!

For Livin on a Prayer –
Opening riff: Must be clean and in time. It’s so recognizable that any slip is noticeable.
Chorus power chords: Nail the rhythm and palm muting. Keep the strumming tight.
Guitar solo: focus on:
-
-
Phrasing over speed — it’s a super singable or melodic solo
-
Make sure bends hit the right pitch — don’t undershoot
-
Tone: Use a crunchy rock tone with maybe some chorus effect — not too distorted.

For Livin on a Prayer
Really try to build up your stamina for the constant eighth notes in the verse. It’s really easy to get tired and start to slow down.
Also, the rhythm of the chorus with the “anticipated” chord changes can feel unnatural. Practice playing the chorus along to the song to get that awkward rhythm to feel natural
Zander
For Livin on a Prayer, pay attention to –
Hi-hat dynamics: Verses are closed hats — light and controlled. Pre-chorus builds. Chorus opens up.
Big fills before the chorus — especially before “Whoa-ohhh, livin’ on a prayer” — but they should serve the groove, not just be flashy
